Democrats Split Over Graham Platner as Scandals Fuel Internal Party Fight in Maine

Date:

A growing divide inside the Democratic Party is becoming increasingly visible as Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner faces mounting criticism over a series of controversies that continue to dominate headlines.

Once viewed by some progressives as a fresh political voice, Platner now finds himself at the center of a widening dispute between the party’s moderate and left-wing factions. With Democrats eyeing Maine as one of their best opportunities to flip a Senate seat in 2026, concerns over his candidacy have intensified.

Questions about Platner’s viability have only increased since Maine Gov. Janet Mills decided not to enter the race, leaving Democrats to wrestle with whether he is the strongest challenger to incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.

Moderate Democrats Warn Of Growing Party Rift

Several prominent Democrats have suggested Platner’s candidacy reflects a deeper ideological struggle unfolding within the party.

Former aide to Andrew Cuomo, Melissa DeRosa, argued that the Maine contest has become a symbol of a broader battle between competing Democratic visions.

“The main race really demonstrates the civil war that’s happening within the Democratic Party, and there are a lot of Democrats, moderate Democrats like myself, who will not cry tears should we lose Maine,”

DeRosa said. “I mean, that would be a pickup to begin with.”

Her remarks underscore the frustration some moderates feel as progressive candidates gain influence in key races.

Democrats have long viewed Maine as a prime target in their effort to reclaim control of the Senate during the 2026 midterm elections. However, Platner’s rise has complicated those calculations.

National Spotlight Brings New Scrutiny

Although Platner was not the preferred choice of many party insiders, he steadily built a national profile after launching his campaign. That visibility reached a new level when he appeared on the cover of Time magazine earlier this month.

However, increased attention also brought renewed examination of his online history.

Previously unearthed Reddit posts sparked widespread criticism. The posts reportedly included comments ranging from criticism of a soldier wounded by the Taliban to graphic personal anecdotes involving portable toilets.

Republicans have eagerly seized on the controversy.

“Democrats’ shift from quietly distancing themselves from Platner to openly disavowing him proves his baggage is catching up with him, and Maine voters won’t excuse it,” NRSC spokesperson Bernadette Breslin said. “Platner’s deviant, scandal-plagued history is only the beginning of the problems he has ahead.”

Democratic Leaders Keep Their Distance

As criticism mounted, several high-profile Democratic figures avoided offering strong public endorsements when questioned about Platner.

Among those remaining largely silent were Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Meanwhile, former Biden administration press office chief of staff Yemisi Egbewole suggested Democrats cannot simply ignore concerns surrounding the candidate.

“I think when we’re talking about moral clarity and what we want to see from Democrats, I think he is an issue,” Egbewole said.

Tattoo Controversy Continues To Follow Campaign

One of the most persistent controversies surrounding Platner involves a tattoo visible in a video that circulated widely last year showing him dancing shirtless.

The tattoo depicted a skull-and-crossbones image resembling the Nazi-associated totenkopf, also known as the “death’s head.”

Platner has repeatedly denied any connection to Nazi ideology and claimed he was unaware of the symbol’s historical associations.

“It was not until I started hearing from reporters and D.C. insiders that I realized this tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol,” Platner said. “I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that — and to insinuate that I did is disgusting. I am already planning to get this removed.”

Despite those explanations, criticism from fellow Democrats has intensified.

Rep. Jake Auchincloss openly questioned Platner’s suitability for office.

“I find that tattoo and his commentary about it to be personally disqualifying,” Auchincloss said.

“I hope Maine voters agree with me. I think it would be a mistake for the Democratic Party to think that Graham Platner’s brand of the Democratic Party is what wins us durable majorities throughout this country.”

Former Jill Biden spokesperson Michael LaRosa also praised Auchincloss for publicly voicing concerns, saying the congressman showed “actual guts” by advocating for a stronger Democratic nominee.

Fetterman Raises Alarm Over Antisemitism Concerns

The controversy also drew comments from Sen. John Fetterman, who was asked whether antisemitism is becoming a larger issue within the Democratic Party.

Fetterman responded with an unequivocal answer.

“absolutely,” he said.

He then pointed directly to Platner as an example.

“I mean, the guy that’s going to win the primary in Maine … has a Nazi tattoo on his chest, and that’s no problem for a lot of voters,” Fetterman said. “So I don’t know why. That’s crazy.”

As Maine’s Senate race moves forward, Platner remains one of the most closely watched candidates in the country. Whether voters ultimately overlook the controversies or view them as disqualifying could have major implications not only for the race itself but also for the Democratic Party’s ongoing struggle over its future direction.
