Californians Sour on Newsom’s Presidential Ambitions: Poll

Date:

According to a recent survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, California Governor Gavin Newsom faces a considerable obstacle in his potential run for the White House in 2024, with 70% of voters opposing his candidacy. The poll revealed that a mere 22% of respondents supported Newsom’s bid for presidency, highlighting the uphill battle he would face if he chooses to pursue a run. Even more concerning for the Governor is the fact that 54% of Democrats in the state do not want him to run for the top job.

A new poll conducted by Quinnipiac University indicates that the vast majority of Californians are against Governor Gavin Newsom’s presidential aspirations. The survey found that 70% of California voters do not want Newsom to run for the White House in 2024, including 54% of California Democrats. This indicates that even though California is primarily a Democratic state, residents are dissatisfied with the direction the state has taken under Newsom’s leadership. Critics argue that the harsh COVID restrictions and high taxes have led to an exodus of residents to other states. Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy called the results a “resounding thumbs-down” from Californian voters.

“Resounding thumbs-down” from Californian voters.

Despite California’s heavily Democratic leaning, a recent poll by Quinnipiac University found that Governor Gavin Newsom may face an uphill battle if he decides to run for president in 2024. The poll showed that 70% of California voters do not want Newsom to run for the White House, with only 22% in favor. Even more notably, 54% of California Democrats are against the idea. The results seem to reflect growing dissatisfaction with Newsom’s leadership and the state’s direction, exacerbated by harsh pandemic restrictions and a high-tax environment that is causing residents to flee to other states. The Quinnipiac poll also found that just 8% of respondents are “very satisfied” with the current state of affairs in California, while 37% are “very dissatisfied.” Despite the poll results, Newsom has said that he has no plans to run for president and is fully committed to supporting President Joe Biden’s re-election.

Despite Democrats performing well in the 2022 midterm election, there are those who believe that in order to secure the White House, President Biden must step down. His general unpopularity, tumultuous tenure, and old age may be too difficult to overcome in a general election. If he were to step aside, it would not be surprising to see California Governor Gavin Newsom, who oversees one of the world’s largest economies with a GDP of $3.4 trillion, enter the race for the Democratic nomination.
