Johnny Carson’s Former Bel Air Mansion Lists For A Striking $40 Million

Date:

Johnny Carson’s former Bel Air mansion is back on the market, and the price tag reflects its storied past. The Los Angeles estate, once home to one of America’s most iconic late-night hosts, has been listed for an eye-catching forty million dollars. The property is represented by listing agents David Kramer and Andrew Buss of Compass, who are showcasing the home’s rare blend of history, privacy, and scale.

A Sprawling Property With Rare Amenities

Originally built in 1950, the residence spans more than nine thousand square feet and sits on one and a half acres in one of the city’s most exclusive enclaves. It features six bedrooms and eleven bathrooms, along with an impressive detached guest house. Inside the main structure, visitors will find a library, wine cellar, home office, gourmet kitchen, two large garages, and a primary suite with generous walk-in closets and dual ensuite bathrooms.

Outside, the estate offers a motor court designed for multiple vehicles, a tiered fountain, an oval pool with a sun deck and cabana, and a regulation tennis court equipped with covered seating. An indoor entertaining area with a kitchenette and powder room further extends the home’s hosting potential.

Carson’s History With The Estate

Carson purchased the property during the 1970s and lived there with his third wife, Joanna, until their separation in 1985. He later moved to Malibu, where his coastal residence went on the market last year for one hundred and ten million dollars. According to The Robb Report, proceeds from the Bel Air sale will be donated to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the David Geffen Foundation, and Share.

New Book Revisits Carson’s Career

Carson’s legacy has recently reentered public conversation following the release of “Love Johnny Carson,” a book written by Mark Malkoff with David Ritz. The author, a longtime Carson admirer, shares interviews and behind-the-scenes details about the entertainer’s life and work.

One anecdote details how years of being lampooned on “Saturday Night Live” influenced Carson’s decision to step away from the spotlight.

“Leno, a guest that night, overheard Johnny in the hallway saying, ‘If they are going to make fun of me, it’s time to go,’” Malkoff wrote. The moment occurred during a May 1991 taping after Carson learned that SNL was planning yet another parody of him.

According to the book, soon after Carson made that remark, the show aired the well-known “Carsenio” sketch. Two days later, he announced that he would be stepping down and that his final broadcast would take place in May 1992.

Carson’s Final Months On Air

As SNL continued to parody him, often through Dana Carvey’s impression, Carson gradually began responding with his own comedic jabs during his final months on television.

The book recounts that “But Johnny had the last laugh. In his monologue on May 20, two days before his final show, he said, ‘We’ve been with this network for thirty years, and this fall — I saw the [new] schedule, and they’re coming up with some real great, innovative programming. They’re going to try a comedy version of Saturday Night Live.’”

Carson’s farewell show aired on May 22, 1992, marking the end of a broadcasting era. Reflecting on his career, Malkoff writes that Carson shared, “I am one of the lucky people in the world” and that he “enjoyed every single minute of” his time at the helm.

In his outro, Carson said, “I want to thank the gentleman who shared the stage with me for 30 years, Mr. Ed McMahon; Mr. Doc Severinsen. And you people watching — I can only tell you that it has been an honor and a privilege to come into your homes all these years … I bid you a very heartfelt good night.”
