An internationally recognized epidemiologist is warning that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ignored the growing scientific evidence suggesting potential health dangers from cell phone radiation.
Dr. Devra Davis, an environmental health expert and founder of the nonprofit Environmental Health Trust, said the agency must face what she called a “very inconvenient truth.”
“The issue of cell phone radiation is, we’ve been in denial, and the denial is in large part psychological,” Davis said.
“We simply can’t think about the possibility … Is it a chance that these things are harmful?”
A Veteran Scientist Raises the Red Flag
Davis holds a Ph.D. in science studies and a post-doctoral Master’s of Public Health in epidemiology. She previously served as a senior adviser in the Department of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton, sitting on the Chemical Safety and Hazard Mitigation Board.
Through the Environmental Health Trust, Davis has spearheaded research examining links between heavy cell phone use and cancer. The organization works to educate policymakers and the public about environmental health hazards.
Troubling Evidence From Global Studies
Although the science remains mixed, several recent studies have raised red flags about potential health effects from prolonged exposure to mobile devices — from older models to the latest 5G handsets.
Research from the University of California, Berkeley, for instance, suggested a possible connection between frequent cell phone use and a heightened risk of tumors, particularly on the right side of the brain.
One study cited by Davis compared sperm samples exposed to cell phone radiation against those that weren’t. The findings, she said, were alarming.
“We have controlled studies where they take two test tubes of sperm from a healthy man. One they don’t expose to cell phone radiation, the other gets exposed. The exposed test tube, those sperm will die three times faster with three times more damage to their DNA,” she explained. “That has been replicated in many studies, so we know that this is a fact, and yet when the bodies that advise the government are asked for their advice, they say, ‘We don’t have enough evidence.’”
‘The FCC Has Utterly Failed to Look’
Davis argued that the lack of decisive action comes from conflicts of interest between regulators and industry figures.
“If you look carefully at the membership of those bodies and the revolving door between the industry and those who regulate it, you can see that there really hasn’t been a full, independent evaluation, which is why we at Environmental Health Trust are calling for an independent evaluation of the science, and the FCC has utterly failed to look,” she said.
Davis is now urging a full, independent investigation into the potential health risks of cell phone radiation — a call she says regulators can no longer afford to ignore.
The Push for Transparency and Public Awareness
As wireless technology becomes increasingly intertwined with daily life, Davis believes the public deserves clearer answers about its safety. Her nonprofit continues to campaign for unbiased research and updated safety standards, warning that “the denial” can no longer continue.
