A Columbia, Tennessee man allegedly tried to launch a drone packed with explosives into a Nashville energy facility, aiming to disrupt critical infrastructure before the FBI intervened, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
In a press release, the DOJ announced the arrest of 24-year-old Skyler Philippi, who faces charges of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted destruction of an energy facility.
‘Moments Away’ from Attack on Critical Infrastructure
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland underscored the seriousness of the incident, saying, “As charged, Skyler Philippi believed he was moments away from launching an attack on a Nashville energy facility to further his violent white supremacist ideology – but the FBI had already compromised his plot,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said. “This case serves as yet another warning to those seeking to sow violence and chaos in the name of hatred by attacking our country’s critical infrastructure: the Justice Department will find you, we will disrupt your plot, and we will hold you accountable.”
Plans Included Mass Shooting and ‘System Shock’ Substation Attack
Earlier this year, Philippi allegedly confided in a confidential human source (CHS) that he intended to carry out a mass shooting at a YMCA in the Columbia, Tennessee area.
In July, he reportedly told another CHS that attacking large interstate substations could “shock the system,” leading to a broader malfunction in other substations. Philippi allegedly researched previous electric substation attacks, deciding firearms alone were insufficient and instead opting to use a drone equipped with explosives to target a substation.
Acquiring Explosives and Preparing for Attack
In September, undercover FBI employees accompanied Philippi to a substation he had previously scouted. During the trip, Philippi allegedly placed an order for C-4 and additional explosives from the undercover agents. He later purchased black powder for use in pipe bombs, intending to employ them in the substation assault.
Philippi allegedly texted the CHS about targeting high-value areas: “if you want to do the most damage as an accelerationist, attack high economic, high tax, political zones in every major metropolis.”
He later described his excitement over the planned substation assault, saying, “Holy sh**. This will go up like a fu**in fourth of July firework.”
The DOJ also noted Philippi’s emphasis on operational secrecy, as he allegedly advised his team to use disguises, oversized shoes, leather gloves, and to burn their clothes afterward. He also warned against carrying smartphones during the attack.
‘New Age’ Begins with Arrest
On November 2, 2024, Philippi reportedly participated in a Nordic ritual, declaring to undercover employees, “This is where the New Age begins.” He stated it was time to carry out something significant that would be remembered “in the annals of history.”
Philippi and the undercover employees then drove to the planned site of attack. Upon arrival, they assumed lookout positions just before law enforcement agents arrested him. The DOJ reported that Philippi was near the rear of the vehicle at the time of his arrest, with the drone powered up and an armed explosive next to it.
FBI Ensures Safety of Infrastructure and Communities
According to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Philippi’s plot was motivated by “a racially motivated violent extremist ideology.” Wray stated, “Driven by a racially motivated violent extremist ideology, the Defendant planned to attack the power grid with a drone and explosives, leaving thousands of Americans and critical infrastructure like hospitals without power. The FBI’s swift work led to the detection and disruption of the defendant’s plot before he could cause any damage. We are committed to holding accountable anyone who threatens the security of our critical infrastructure or seeks to harm American communities through domestic violent extremism.”
Philippi faces up to life in prison if convicted of the charges against him.
The FBI’s Preventative Action
This case reflects the ongoing vigilance of the FBI and DOJ to safeguard America’s critical infrastructure from domestic violent extremism. With Philippi’s arrest, federal authorities once again underscore their commitment to keeping the public safe from those who seek to disrupt society with hate-fueled violence.
