Spirit Airlines Flight Targeted by Gunfire in Haiti; Crew Member Injured as Violence Escalates

Date:

A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale encountered a harrowing situation as it attempted to land in Haiti on Monday. Gunfire struck the aircraft, leading the airline to divert the plane to Santiago, Dominican Republic, where it landed safely. The unexpected gunfire incident injured one crew member, forcing Spirit Airlines to immediately suspend its Haiti-bound services until further notice.

Mid-Flight Crisis and Quick Response

HaitiHaiti had departed Fort Lauderdale, scheduled to land at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. However, it changed course to Santiago after being struck multiple times by gunfire. Tragically, one of the bullets grazed a flight attendant, who sustained minor injuries. Medical personnel evaluated the flight attendant, and Spirit Airlines confirmed there were no injuries among passengers. The plane itself suffered visible damage consistent with gunfire, sparking swift action by the airline.

“The safety of our Guests and Team Members is our top priority, and we have suspended our service at Port-au-Prince (PAP) and Cap-Haitien (CAP) pending further evaluation,” Spirit Airlines stated.

Violence and Instability Rock Haiti

The incident underscores Haiti’s recent descent into violence and instability. The country has been grappling with a surge of violence as criminal gangs battle for control, filling a power vacuum left after the fall of the government. The escalating unrest has had far-reaching implications, including stirring up intense debate around immigration policies in the United States.

In the November election, Haitian refugees coming to the U.S. emerged as a focal point of discussions, with President-elect Donald Trump criticizing the Biden administration’s stance on immigration.

Flight Suspensions Follow Violence

In the aftermath of Monday’s incident, Spirit Airlines promptly suspended all flights to Haiti, grounding future trips into Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien. The airline noted that operations in the area would remain halted as they assess the situation and work to protect passengers and staff.

This tragic event, captured in images and video available online, highlights the challenges airlines face operating in high-risk zones.
