Sophie Cunningham made a high-profile appearance at the Gateway race weekend, moving through the garage, meeting drivers and drawing public support from figures across NASCAR.
Cunningham Makes The Rounds At Gateway
The Indiana Fever guard spent time with Chase Elliott, Austin Dillon, Carson Hocevar, Michael Jordan, Jeff Gordon and others during the event in Madison, Illinois. She also attended the drivers’ meeting, visited the pits and joined activities around the track.
Cunningham had attended another race within the past year and previously called the NASCAR crowd “her people.” Her busy Gateway itinerary reinforced that connection.
She has also served as a correspondent during the WNBA season.
At one point, Cunningham told racing fans, “You guys are salt of the earth people.”
Austin Dillon Offers A Clear Message
Dillon’s interaction with Cunningham stood out. The driver presented her with a collection of team merchandise and memorabilia, then made his feelings clear regarding her public stance on women’s sports.
“We’re huge fans. We love what you stand for. That’s the biggest thing.”
The moment gained further attention online, underscoring Cunningham’s appeal among many fans and members of the racing community.
Kyle Larson Ends Long Winless Stretch
On the track, Kyle Larson emerged from a chaotic afternoon to win the Enjoy Illinois 300 and end a 51-race winless streak.
Larson’s previous victory came at Kansas in May 2025. At Gateway, however, survival mattered as much as speed. The race produced 18 cautions, leaving drivers to navigate repeated restarts, wrecks and changing track position.
It became a classic “last man standing” contest, the kind more commonly associated with superspeedway racing.
Alex Bowman finished second after a difficult season, putting himself in contention late in the race. His emotional post-race interview also became a talking point after a reporter asked, “We love our fur babies, don’t we? And when we lose them, it is tough. Was he on your mind, and were you racing for him today?”
Hocevar-Keselowski Feud Continues To Build
Meanwhile, the conflict between Carson Hocevar and Brad Keselowski remained a major subplot after their Darlington incident.
Gateway leaned into the rivalry with track promotion and fan signage, signaling that the growing tension has become part of the sport’s broader conversation. Hocevar’s polarizing style has made him a compelling figure, while Keselowski’s expected response could add another chapter at Bristol.
