Fifth New Orleans Inmate Recaptured After Bold Escape – Murder Suspect Caught in French Quarter

Date:

The 19-year-old murder suspect, one of ten inmates who staged a brazen escape from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility last week, was finally recaptured after being spotted in the bustling French Quarter, Louisiana State Police confirmed Tuesday.

Boyd had been briefly seen just hours after the Friday jailbreak but slipped through the cracks, until now.

“Boyd will ultimately be transported to a secure state facility outside of the area and booked for Simple Escape,” the agency said in a statement.

A Deadly Backstory

Boyd isn’t just another name on a fugitive list. He stands accused of fatally shooting Brandon Fees during a car burglary in 2024—a case that already had him facing charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and threatening a public official before his escape.

Now, his charges grow longer.

The Hole Behind the Toilet

Boyd’s escape, along with nine others wasn’t just opportunistic. It was calculated.

Surveillance footage revealed that the group crawled through a hole cleverly concealed behind a jail toilet. Once through, they scaled barbed wire, hopped the perimeter fence, and sprinted across a highway into a residential neighborhood. There, they ditched their orange jumpsuits and vanished into the night.

Authorities described the breakout as “coordinated” and, increasingly, “an inside job.”

Still Out There: Five Inmates Remain at Large

While Boyd’s arrest marks a turning point, the manhunt is far from over. Five escapees are still missing, and each poses a significant risk to public safety:

  • Lenton J. Vanburen Jr., 26: Facing multiple weapons charges, obstruction of justice, and introducing contraband into prison.
  • Jermaine Donald, 42: Charged with second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and weapons violations.
  • Antoine Massey, 32: Accused of domestic abuse by strangulation, car theft, and a parole violation.
  • Derrick Groves, 27: Facing two second-degree murder charges, three counts of attempted murder, and battery on a correctional officer.
  • Leo O. Tate Sr., 31: Linked to burglary, vehicle theft, drug offenses, and illegal possession of a firearm.

Each has vanished without a trace, so far.

Insider on the Hook: Jail Worker Arrested

Adding fuel to the fire, Louisiana authorities on Tuesday charged Sterling Williams, a 33-year-old maintenance worker at the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, with 10 counts of principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office.

Williams reportedly confessed that an inmate threatened to “shank” him if he didn’t cooperate with the escape plan. That threat, combined with what investigators believe was internal complicity has opened a deeper investigation into failures inside the jail.

What’s Next

For now, Corey Boyd is back behind bars, this time in a more secure facility. But with half the escapees still unaccounted for, Louisiana authorities remain under pressure to answer two burning questions:

How did this happen, and who else helped make it possible?
