Inside the Rise and Fall of Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn: New Video Raises Tough Questions on Jan. 6 Narrative

Date:

Harry Dunn, the former U.S. Capitol Police Officer, has built a reputation on speaking out about January 6. But a new video suggests his story may not align with the truth.

This latest production, “A Day in the Life of Harry Dunn: Part One — A Leisurely Pace,” delves into Dunn’s public account of that fateful day. The video, which is streaming online, paints a stark picture, contrasting Dunn’s version of events with Capitol security footage and other evidence.

Steve Baker, the investigative reporter who helmed the project, didn’t hold back in his assessment of Dunn’s story. “Everything he did to establish his fame was done deceptively,” Baker stated. He explained that Dunn’s vivid recollection of a Capitol briefing he allegedly attended on Jan. 6 never happened, according to security footage.

“When one opens their own narrative with so much detail about the time, the location, the content of the meeting that never happened,” Baker asserted, “well, then everything else he says about January 6 must be called into question.”

Rising Doubts About Dunn’s Story

Despite his compelling accounts, Dunn’s truthfulness has faced increasing scrutiny. In 2024, after stepping away from the Capitol Police, Dunn launched a short-lived congressional bid and subsequently joined President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign. During his campaign, Dunn spoke about the January 6 violence, often stressing the brutal treatment he and his colleagues faced.

“The violence that you saw was probably 10, 100 times worse than what the cameras portrayed it to be,” Dunn told a Michigan audience in August.

While Dunn’s tales of chaos have captivated many, this investigation presents a different view. Baker meticulously reviewed thousands of hours of security footage, only to find that Dunn’s dramatic accounts don’t align with recorded events. His purported clashes with rioters and intense “hand-to-hand combat” are conspicuously absent from the video evidence.

Investigation Uncovers Discrepancies

Baker’s doubts about Dunn’s version of events started while listening to Dunn’s testimony during the first Oath Keepers trial in 2022. Baker noted, “The details Dunn shared not only didn’t add up, they were different from what he told the FBI in his first meeting with agents in 2021.”

One of the most glaring inconsistencies involves Capitol Police Special Agent David Lazarus. Dunn testified that Lazarus witnessed a heated encounter with the Oath Keepers, but footage shows Lazarus was actually on the opposite side of the Capitol at that time.

Challenging the Narrative of a Jan. 6 Hero

Dunn’s story of facing off against 50 Trump supporters who allegedly hurled racial slurs at him has been one of his most powerful recollections. But after combing through hours of footage, Baker and his team couldn’t find any visual evidence that supports this or Dunn’s claims of fellow officers being carried away on stretchers.

“The key to the story is that Harry rose to fame based on deception and lies,” Baker declared.

Despite these revelations, Dunn remains a celebrated figure in some circles. He has appeared on numerous talk shows, received a Presidential Citizens Medal from Biden in 2023, and published a memoir, “Standing My Ground,” which Baker derided as “a gold mine of lies.”

When asked for comment, neither Dunn nor the Capitol Police responded.
