Aaron Rodgers Sets the Record Straight on Sideline Interaction with Robert Saleh in Jets’ Dominant Home Win

Date:

All is well in the Meadowlands, despite what some fans might have speculated after seeing New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers seemingly reject a sideline embrace from head coach Robert Saleh. The incident, which occurred during the first half of Thursday night’s commanding win over the New England Patriots, sparked curiosity on social media, with many wondering if there was any tension between the two.

During the game, Rodgers, a four-time league MVP, and Saleh appeared to have an awkward moment, prompting some viewers to think that Rodgers’ fierce competitiveness was the reason for the snub—especially given that the Jets were already leading 14-0.

However, Rodgers and Saleh addressed the situation directly during the postgame press conference.

Saleh Explains the Moment

“Part of the things that we’ve been talking about is to just get the defense a two-score lead,” Saleh told reporters with a grin, shedding light on the playful nature of the interaction.
“And it was a two-score lead, so I guess he just wanted to see something on defense. He just reminded me that we got a two-score lead.”

Fans who initially interpreted the interaction as a snub may have been surprised, but Saleh’s explanation made it clear that the moment was part of the competitive spirit and camaraderie shared between the two. The relationship, far from tense, is focused on execution and results.

Rodgers Confirms It Wasn’t Awkward

Rodgers’ explanation mirrored Saleh’s, reinforcing the notion that the interaction was far from uncomfortable.

“Oh, awkward? No, it wasn’t awkward at all,” Rodgers said, laughing off any suggestion of tension.

“He’s not a big hugger usually. So, I didn’t know he was going for the hug. He likes to do the two-hand chest push as well. But he talks a lot about two-score leads. So I kind of just gave him a push and said ‘two-score lead.’ That’s what happened.”

Rodgers, always focused on delivering results, made his point on the field and in the exchange, reminding his coach that they had accomplished a key goal early in the game.

Jets Shine in Home Opener

The Jets delivered an impressive performance on the field, dominating their AFC East rival Patriots with a 24-3 victory. Rodgers, who missed most of last season due to a season-ending Achilles injury, returned with a vengeance, completing 27 of 35 passes for 281 yards and two touchdown throws to Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard.

New York’s win ended an eight-game home losing streak against New England, marking a triumphant return to MetLife Stadium for Rodgers. After securing a road win against the Tennessee Titans just days earlier, the Jets returned home to New York with all eyes on their quarterback, who didn’t disappoint.

Now, with a mini bye week ahead, the Jets will regroup before facing the Denver Broncos on September 29.
