Federal agents used pepper spray and physical force to push back anti-ICE demonstrators outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday night, as tensions escalated after several days of protests centered on detainee treatment and alleged conditions inside the center.
Video footage from the scene showed demonstrators attempting to block vehicles from exiting the privately operated immigration detention facility. Federal officers moved in to clear roadways and prevent protesters from obstructing traffic, leading to a heated confrontation that quickly turned physical.
Clash Erupts As Vehicles Leave Facility
Footage circulating online captured demonstrators gathering around vehicles leaving Delaney Hall. As some protesters approached and made contact with the hood of one departing vehicle, federal agents stepped in and forcibly pushed individuals away from the roadway.
The situation intensified as officers deployed pepper spray and used batons while attempting to disperse the crowd. Several demonstrators were seen retreating as agents cleared a path for vehicles to exit the facility.
The confrontation marked the latest flashpoint in an ongoing dispute surrounding the detention center, which has become the focus of growing political and public scrutiny.
Homeland Security Reports Assaults On Officers

Following the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin addressed the clash in a statement posted on X.
“ICE law enforcement officers were assaulted by anti-ICE rioters who sprayed law enforcement with an unknown chemical substance,” Markwayne said.
Mullin also stated that authorities arrested two individuals during the confrontation.
According to the secretary, the suspects were taken into custody for allegedly assaulting, resisting and impeding federal officers.
Protests Fueled By Claims Of Detainee Conditions
The demonstrations began over concerns regarding detainee treatment at Delaney Hall. Protest organizers cited reports of a hunger strike among detainees and raised questions about living conditions inside the facility.
However, federal officials strongly disputed those allegations.
On Monday, Mullin responded directly to claims circulating about the detention center, writing: “There is NO hunger strike at Delaney Hall. There are no subprime conditions.”
The conflicting narratives have fueled continued protests and intensified debate over the operation of the facility.
New Jersey Democrats Join Demonstrations

Several prominent New Jersey Democrats visited the detention center during the demonstrations, including Senator Andy Kim and Governor Mikie Sherrill.
Kim was granted access to enter and tour the facility. Sherrill, however, was denied entry, a development that quickly became a point of criticism among Democratic leaders.
The dispute drew additional attention from state and national Democratic officials, including Senator Cory Booker, who joined others in publicly criticizing ICE and the facility through social media posts.
DHS Defends Enforcement Efforts
As criticism mounted, the Department of Homeland Security issued a forceful response on Tuesday, making clear that enforcement operations would continue despite ongoing protests.
“We will NOT let rioters stop or slow @ICEgov down.”
The agency later expanded on that position through a series of social media posts defending federal immigration enforcement efforts.
“While New Jersey sanctuary politicians and anti-ICE agitators chose to spend their Memorial Day weekend smearing law enforcement and rioting outside ICE’s Delaney Hall facility, our law enforcement continued to put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, pedophiles, and kidnappers,”
The department accompanied the statement with a thread highlighting cases involving criminal illegal aliens whom officials said had recently been arrested.
Tensions Remain High Around Delaney Hall

The confrontation underscores the growing political battle surrounding immigration enforcement and detention operations in New Jersey. While protesters continue demanding greater transparency and improved treatment for detainees, federal officials maintain that officers are carrying out lawful enforcement actions and protecting public safety.
With arrests made, allegations exchanged, and demonstrations showing little sign of slowing, Delaney Hall remains at the center of a rapidly escalating dispute that continues to draw national attention.
