The MLB trade deadline came and went in a frenzy, with over 50 deals finalized in just 31 hours. In the aftermath, DraftKings’ World Series odds shifted dramatically as teams either made aggressive pushes for October or signaled a clear rebuild.
Some clubs emptied their farm systems in a gamble for glory. Others made the hard decision to sell high and look ahead to next year.
Here are the biggest winners and losers based on DraftKings’ updated odds.
Winner: San Diego Padres Go All In
The Padres were one of the most aggressive teams at the deadline. San Diego went deep into its prospect pool to bring in serious firepower. They acquired All-Star closer Mason Miller and designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn, along with starting pitchers JP Sears and Nestor Cortes.
On Tuesday morning, San Diego’s World Series odds stood at +3500. By the end of the deadline, they had improved to +2000. The message from the front office was clear. They are chasing a championship now.
Loser: Arizona Diamondbacks Wave the White Flag
Arizona made a decisive move in the other direction. Following a sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros, the Diamondbacks unloaded key players and opted to sell.
They traded Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners, signaling a shift in strategy. DraftKings reflected that change harshly. Arizona’s odds to win it all fell from 350-1 to 600-1.
Winner: Yankees Reinforce the Bullpen
The New York Yankees didn’t overhaul their roster, but they did make key additions to their relief corps. Within the final two hours of the deadline, they added three bullpen arms to strengthen a pitching staff already among the league’s best.
Prior to the deadline, New York was listed at +1000 to win the World Series. Post-deadline, those odds improved to +850. Interestingly, they now have better World Series odds than the Blue Jays, despite trailing them in the AL East race.
Loser: Twins Tear It Down
Minnesota made it clear they were ready to move on. Short of holding on to Joe Ryan, the Twins traded nearly every major contributor on the roster.
Jhoan Duran, Carlos Correa, Griffin Jax, Willi Castro, Ty France, Danny Coulombe, Harrison Bader, and Chris Paddack were all shipped out. The overhaul had a swift effect on their odds. Minnesota’s World Series chances fell from 100-1 to 170-1. In the AL Central, they dropped from 25-1 to 70-1.
Winner: Mariners Target a Historic Run
Seattle is officially in win-now mode. The Mariners brought in both Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez from Arizona, moves designed to bolster the lineup for a deep postseason run.
With those reinforcements, Seattle’s World Series odds improved from 18-1 to 14-1. Their odds to win the AL West also jumped from +310 to +240.
Loser: Giants Shift to the Future
Stuck around the .500 mark, the San Francisco Giants looked around the league and made a pragmatic choice. With the Dodgers and Padres gaining steam in the division, and other contenders rising in the East and Central, San Francisco opted to build for the future.
They moved on from expiring contracts, including Tyler Rogers and Mike Yastrzemski. All-Star reliever Camilo Doval was also dealt, heading to the Yankees. Before the deadline, the Giants sat at +6500 to win the World Series. After their sell-off, those odds fell to 100-1.
