New York City is entering new territory. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has officially unveiled the Office for LGBTQIA+ Affairs, marking a significant shift in how the city plans to support and advocate for its LGBTQIA+ population.
During Friday’s announcement, Mamdani emphasized the scale of the community, noting that New York City has one of the largest populations of “queer” residents in the United States. The newly created office aims to centralize services, strengthen protections, and expand access to resources.
At the center of this move is a historic appointment.
Taylor Brown Makes History

Attorney Taylor Brown has been selected to lead the office, becoming the first transgender person to head a city agency or office in New York City.
Mamdani underscored the importance of the role and the message behind it, stating, “New York City is proud of its LGBTQIA+ community and will refuse to deny health care, safety, or dignity to anyone on the basis of their identity.”
Mamdani added, “With Taylor Brown as director of the new Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs, the city’s queer community will not only be celebrated, but protected at every turn.”
The appointment signals what the administration describes as a broader commitment to inclusion, access, and equity across city services.
A Personal Commitment From the New Director
Brown, reflecting on the appointment, pointed to New York City’s role in shaping his life and career.
“New York has given me everything — life-saving health care, education, a home, a career, my chosen family, and a life of purpose. I am so proud to serve this city as the inaugural director of the Mayor’s Office for LGBTQIA+ Affairs,” he said.
Looking ahead, Brown outlined a vision centered on access and protection.
“I will work every day to ensure that the doors of New York City remain open to all and to continue New York City’s legacy as a beacon of opportunity and hope for those who have been ignored, discriminated against, and intentionally excluded,” Brown added.
Focus on Protection and Access

Meanwhile, the new office is expected to play a key role in safeguarding LGBTQIA+ residents from what Brown described as “hostile actors.” The administration has also indicated that expanding access to city services for transgender and LGBTQ+ individuals will be a top priority.
In practical terms, this means ensuring that public programs, healthcare access, and community resources are more inclusive and easier to navigate.
Building on Existing Programs
The Office for LGBTQIA+ Affairs will not start from scratch. Instead, it will absorb the existing NYC Unity Project, which was originally launched under the de Blasio administration.
This transition is designed to streamline efforts while building on previous initiatives that supported LGBTQIA+ communities across the city.
Broader Context and Political Backdrop

Still, Mamdani’s approach to LGBTQIA+ issues has already drawn attention beyond this announcement. Allies of the mayor have pushed for broader policy discussions, including proposals related to the role of artificial intelligence in sensitive fields.
At the same time, previous appointments, such as Abby Stein to the mayor’s transition team, have also sparked reactions from activists and political observers alike.
However, with the launch of this new office, the administration is clearly signaling that LGBTQIA+ advocacy will remain a central focus moving forward.
