What began as a celebratory spring break trip has turned into a life-altering ordeal for one Florida high school senior, who is now facing months of recovery after a devastating skiing accident in Colorado.
Zoey McVoy, a student preparing for graduation and college, suffered severe injuries while skiing in Vail earlier this week. The popular mountain destination, known for its expansive slopes, became the site of a terrifying accident that left the teen fighting for her life.
A Promising Future Interrupted
McVoy had been looking forward to the final milestones of her senior year. Prom, graduation, and college plans were all within reach. Instead, those moments have been abruptly replaced by hospital stays and multiple surgeries.
“Instead of enjoying the final months of her senior year—prom, graduation, and preparing for college—Zoey is now facing a long and difficult road to recovery,” an online fundraiser stated.
She had traveled to Colorado as a guest of a friend, expecting a routine getaway. However, the trip quickly took a tragic turn after a serious incident on the slopes Monday.
Injuries Far Worse Than First Thought

Initially, first responders believed her injuries were not critical. That assumption changed rapidly.
In her own words, McVoy described how the situation escalated:
“However, they quickly realized that it was something more serious and I had to be transported to another hospital through a helicopter,” McVoy said.
“When I arrived, the doctors immediately put me into surgery for my spleen, which had a grade 5 rupture and threatened my life. The doctors also discovered that 8 of my ribs were severely broken, causing me to bruise and puncture my lung and I also had a brain bleed and concussion.”
The extent of her injuries is staggering. She suffered a brain bleed, a ruptured spleen, internal bleeding, shattered ribs, and significant facial trauma. Doctors also found multiple skull fractures, requiring further surgical intervention.
Emergency Surgeries and Ongoing Recovery
Doctors acted quickly, performing multiple surgeries to stabilize her condition. Titanium plates were inserted to repair her ribs, while additional procedures addressed fractures in her skull and face.
Despite the severity, there is cautious optimism.
McVoy confirmed that the operations were successful, though her future remains uncertain. “I honestly don’t know what my return to school, graduation, college decisions, and my way of life will look like for the next several months,” she wrote.
Meanwhile, her mother, Ann McVoy, shared an update as her daughter continues treatment at Denver Health Hospital.
“We do have a long road ahead of us. We are trying hard to navigate this unique situation,” she wrote. “I will say all the surgeries have been completed and we have had no serious complications. She is now in a healing and recovery type of situation.”
A Student Known for Excellence

Back home, McVoy is known as a high-achieving student with a bright future. She attends Saint Andrew’s School on an academic scholarship and plays on the varsity girls basketball team.
Just months ago, she was recognized for her academic drive.
“A special shoutout to Zoey McVoy ’26, who shared how this course strengthened her passion for both medicine and law,” a school post read. “We’re proud of our students and excited to see how this innovative program continues to grow.”
That ambition now faces an unexpected pause, as recovery takes center stage.
Community Watches and Waits
As McVoy begins what doctors describe as a long recovery journey, her story has sparked concern and support from those following her case.
The road ahead is uncertain, filled with rehabilitation and difficult decisions. Still, one thing is clear, her resilience will be tested in ways no senior year ever should.
