A bombshell report reveals Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign spent significantly more on her Oprah Winfrey town hall than previously disclosed. Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings, initially uncovered by the Washington Examiner, show the campaign paid Harpo Productions two separate $500,000 payments on October 15. However, two sources told The New York Times the true cost of the event reached nearly $2.5 million.
Extravagant Spending Raises Eyebrows
Harris’ 15-week campaign spent a staggering $1.5 billion—an average of $100 million per week—according to the New York Times. Despite the massive budget, the campaign fell short, leaving the Democratic Party $20 million in debt.
Democratic donors have voiced frustration, citing frequent and relentless fundraising requests even after the campaign ended. Among the most notable expenses were $9,000 spent on high-end ice cream from boutique vendors like Sweet Lucy’s Ice Cream and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.
Costly Travel and Ad Buys
From July to November, Harris’ campaign reportedly used $15,000 on food delivery services such as Uber Eats and DoorDash. In just two weeks during October, $2.6 million was spent on private jet travel alone.
In an attempt to bolster her chances in Nevada, the campaign reserved $900,000 worth of ad space on Las Vegas’ Sphere during the election’s final week. Despite the investment, Harris still lost Nevada by three points.
Celebrities and Influencers Dominate Budget
A substantial portion of the campaign’s budget went toward securing celebrity appearances, performances, and influencer partnerships aimed at drawing attention to campaign events.
Winfrey, a billionaire media mogul, addressed rumors surrounding her involvement, stating unequivocally to TMZ, she was ” paid nothing.”
Harpo Productions Defends Payments
A spokesperson for Harpo Productions confirmed to Variety that payments were made by the campaign but insisted the funds covered production costs.
“Oprah Winfrey was at no point during the campaign paid a personal fee, nor did she receive a fee from Harpo,” the spokesperson clarified.
Questions Mount Over Lavish Spending
The revelations about Harris’ campaign spending have sparked criticism from party insiders and donors, with some questioning the allocation of funds. Despite the high-profile endorsements and extravagant expenditures, the campaign ultimately failed to resonate with voters.
The fallout from Harris’ unsuccessful presidential run continues to unfold, leaving Democrats scrambling to rebuild trust with donors and supporters.
