A Maryland teacher has been accused of promoting Marxist ideology in the classroom and using social media to boast about it.
Rebecca F. Rothstein, a self-proclaimed communist and educator at North Bethesda Middle School, has come under fire for posting controversial videos on TikTok. The videos, which have since been removed, showed Rothstein bragging about indoctrinating students with “Marxist literature” and advocating for the overthrow of capitalism.
“I’m proud as f*** to be liberal,” Rothstein
declared in one video.
She also claimed that teaching math and science should not be prioritized in the classroom, and instead suggested that teachers should focus on teaching anti-racism and kindness.
Rothstein’s actions have sparked outrage and concern from parents and community members who feel that the classroom should not be used as a platform for promoting political ideology.
In one of the videos, she expressed her desire to prioritize anti-racism and kindness lessons over math and science.
“We can skip the math, skip the science, like we’ll do that next year. Maybe this year we focus on teaching our youth how to be anti-racist,” Rothstein said in the video.
“As a teacher, I wish we could do more with our students, like teach anti-racism and how to be kind people. Does anyone else feel like … we can skip the math, skip the science, like we’ll do that next year. Maybe this year we focus on teaching our youth how to be anti-racist,” Rothstein said in the video.
In another social media post, Rothstein proclaimed, “F*** capitalism” and proudly claimed to provide her students with Marxist literature.
Rothstein proclaimed, “F*** capitalism”
Rothstein, a teacher at North Bethesda Middle School in the Montgomery County School District, shared controversial videos on social media, including one where she stated, “Tired after a long day of indoctrinating students.” She went on to tell her followers that she had to “un-brainwash” herself to “fall in love” with socialism and communism. “If everyone had the same amount of money, then money wouldn’t be worth anything,” she claimed. Rothstein insisted that “capitalism must go” and added that “revolutions involve violence.” She also defended the summer 2020 riots that destroyed cities and small businesses.
“Boys should get vasectomies at birth, or when it is safe to do so”
In one video, she stated that she believes “boys should get vasectomies at birth, or when it is safe to do so” and asked why preventing pregnancy is only on the woman.
In another video, Rothstein claimed that “all white people experience white privilege” and linked being “silent on Palestine” with “white supremacy.” She also expressed her pride in her ability to recognize white privilege, saying that it’s not about work ethic but rather the color of one’s skin.
Despite media outlets’ attempts to reach out to Rothstein and Montgomery County School District, they have not responded to a request for comment.
